Flannel is just cotton until it's brushed. After weaving, the cloth runs under fine wire brushes that lift a soft nap from the surface — and that nap is the whole point. It traps a thin layer of warm air against you, so the shirt holds heat without the weight of a heavy cloth, and feels worn-in from the very first wear.
