Seersucker earns its place in the heat. The name comes from the Persian shir o shakar — 'milk and sugar' — for the way the cloth alternates smooth and puckered stripes. That pucker is woven in on the loom, two tensions running side by side, and it never washes out. It also does real work: the raised stripes hold the fabric off your skin, so air moves where a flat cotton would cling. The shirt runs cool, dries fast, and never asks to be ironed. A Southern summer tradition, made the honest way.
