Tower Mills
Fall River, MA was affectionately known as Spindle City. Once the epicenter of US Cotton Textile production, the city is littered with large multistory white granite mill buildings; monoliths of a city once booming with economic activity. Working in an old mill building comes with its quirks. Our factory is located in Tower Mill (originally Barnard Mill), a 150 year old 5 story structure. Developed beginning in 1874, it was the first mill to use ring spinners instead of mule spinners, and was a major local employer until 1939. Here are our four favorite reasons we love it.
1. The Light
Large factory windows let in the best light! It can make photographing the simplest scene create so much drama and warmth. Our factory floor windows face Northwest so the floor really comes to life around 3PM every day as the sun wanes.
2. The Textures
Every surface, the walls, the floors show signs of patina and age. Industrial work means hard wearing surfaces. Even concrete and hardwood show their age in every room.
3. The Finds
Working in an old building with lots of old machines, you are bound to come across some excellent old pieces that can be repurposed into something new. After rags, all purpose cleaners, and paper towels...what was once old and derelict becomes something fresh and coveted.
4. The People
We are so lucky to have neighbors who can lend a helping hand. Frank Clegg Leatherworks is on the 5th floor of our same building. Mission Cold Brew is our neighbor one floor below. We are neighbors to printing businesses, marketing services, pattern makers, and a very famous Doll House manufacturer (Flip This Dollhouse). A great community of people who take pride in an honest days work.
